Christ is clothed in Scripture and the means of graces according to Scripture. There is no mystical encounter with Jesus apart from these means. It is liberalism that teaches you can meet Christ wherever you want.
True theology teaches that the way to meet God is through Scripture and the verbal doctrinal revelation found within it, along with other ordained means of grace. We meet Jesus through Scripture and the doctrines it teaches. We cannot meet Christ apart from the doctrines according to the scripture that reveal Him. It is these doctrines that allow us to know Him.
God is incomprehensible in Himself outside of these means. Therefore, God accommodates Himself to us through the means He has ordained—Scripture (preaching sound doctrines) and sacraments according to Scripture.
If someone neglects or distorts these means, the problem lies with the person, not with God, who has revealed and offered Himself through these means of grace.
Saying, “I meet my personal Jesus in a vacuum,” is liberalism. We meet Jesus in the preaching of sound doctrines and other means of grace. He clothes Himself through the Gospel and means of grace. Here are two significant points from the shorter catechism.
Q. 31. What is effectual calling?
A. Effectual calling is the work of God’s Spirit, whereby, convincing us of our sin and misery, enlightening our minds in the knowledge of Christ, and renewing our wills, He persuades and enables us to embrace Jesus Christ, freely offered to us in the gospel.
Jesus, as He is clothed within the Gospel. We don’t offer Christ in mystical, unknown means.
Q. 86. What is faith in Jesus Christ?
A. Faith in Jesus Christ is a saving grace, whereby we receive and rest upon Him alone for salvation, as He is offered to us in the gospel.
In ordinary conditions, you cannot have God as your Father apart from the Church being your Mother (the local church). There is no such thing as “me and my Jesus” in the mystical sense. You find Jesus waiting for you in the Church! It is He who established the Church to be the place where we meet Him.(check Calvin’s geneva catechism).
This false “Protestant” liberalism and individualism is the most frustrating thing to watch.
This is why I reject Barthianism. People may try to portray Van Til as an “old man” who didn’t understand it, but we must be cautious with sound doctrine. Barth offered other means to meet God besides Scripture. In an attempt to secure God’s transcendence, he compromised on God’s immanence in His means of grace. In trying to escape liberalism, he ended up introducing another form of liberalism. Van Til was right.
